As Jeff reports, the administration says it would more strictly enforce federal gun laws, help cities and states hire more police officers and promote community policing to try to curb an increase in deadly crime as the homicide rate climbs to historic levels in major cities across the country. Republicans have seized on the issue, using it as a political cudgel to attack Democrats ahead of the 2022 midterm elections.
